PHP 7.4 reached its End of Life (EOL) on November 28, 2022, meaning it no longer receives security updates. However, at that time, the WordPress community was still in the process of fully supporting PHP 8+. Recognizing the potential risks, Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, took proactive measures.

Automattic committed resources to continue maintaining security updates for PHP 7.4 beyond its official EOL. This intervention provided the WordPress community with nearly two additional years to update themes and plugins to support PHP 8+. This effort was crucial in ensuring that websites still running PHP 7.4 remained secure while the ecosystem adapted to the newer PHP versions.

Staying Updated

As a WordPress user, it is essential to keep your PHP version up to date. Running an unsupported PHP version can expose your site to security vulnerabilities and compatibility issues. Regularly updating your PHP version and ensuring your themes and plugins are compatible with the latest releases will help maintain the security and performance of your WordPress site.

PHP is an integral part of WordPress, enabling the dynamic functionality that powers millions of websites. Understanding the PHP release cycle and staying updated with the latest versions is crucial for the security and performance of your WordPress site. Automattic’s commitment to maintaining PHP 7.4 security updates exemplifies the dedication to a secure and seamless user experience within the WordPress community. As the web continues to evolve, so too will PHP and WordPress, working together to create a better, safer, and more dynamic internet.

Synergy is committed to making sure your website runs smoothly and we are fully aware of PHP 7.4’s EOL. All websites hosted by us have been upgraded to PHP 8.1!
